The Kitto Question: Five Minutes, One Question, All the Answers

Recruitment’s full of big ideas, bold opinions and burning questions. But what happens when you give someone just five minutes to answer one big question and a ticking clock that makes sure the juicy bits come first?

Welcome to The Kitto Question.

Each episode, we throw a single recruitment or marketing question at an industry pro and give them five minutes to answer. If they deliver before the buzzer, they make it to the Wall of Fame.

If not, well, they’re straight to the bin. Quick. Unfiltered. All killer, no filler.

The goal here is to spark better questions, sharper thinking, with a few laughs along the way.

Here’s a quick recap of our first four episodes:

Ep. 1: How Do You Make a Successful Podcast?

Guest: Nitin Sharma, Founder of Rectools.io and host of RecTalks

We’ve been asked many times over if podcasts are worth it. So, for our debut, we went meta and asked the OG of recruitment podcasts how to do them properly.

Here’s what Nitin had to say:

“There’s no point starting a podcast if you’re going to dip in and out of it. Consistency isn’t just for the algorithm; it’s how you build trust.”

The biggest takeaway for us?

“Five people listening to your podcast is still five people who invited you into their world.”

Keep it consistent, forget vanity metrics, and focus on depth over volume.

Ep. 2: What Makes a Good L+D Function?

Guest: Leah Naffah, Executive Director at i-Pharm Consulting

Like marketing, L&D is a massive but often under-appreciated function of a recruitment business. But how do you get it right?

Well, according to the pro in the hot seat:

“The biggest mistake is thinking L&D’s job is training. It’s not. It’s productivity.”

From there, she breaks it down beautifully: align your L&D strategy to the business, measure impact not attendance, and remember that even seasoned consultants need development.

“Your brand is your success. If no one knows what you offer, it doesn’t matter how good your training is.”

Ep. 3: How Do You Manage a Marketer?

Guest: Glenn Southam, VP of Insights at Meet Life Sciences

It’s the question every recruitment leader should be asking, because managing marketers is NOT the same as managing recruiters.

“Too many try to KPI marketers like they’re on a sales desk, it just doesn’t work. You can’t manage creativity with call targets.”

Instead, his advice is simple: coach, don’t control. Focus on outcomes, not output. Lead your marketers the way you’d want your brand led. With trust, clarity, and room to experiment.

“A marketer’s job is to create the conversations that recruiters then convert,” he adds. “If you don’t give them space to think, you’ll never get real marketing.”

Mic drop.

Ep. 4: How Do You Do RPO?

Guest: Paul Sharpe, Co-founder of NorthStar People

Few topics divide recruiters quite like RPO. Some love it, some swear it’s not for them.

But Paul keeps it simple: start with why.

“Too many jump straight into the what. You’ve got to know why you’re doing RPO before you even think about how.”

It’s a lesson in clarity over complexity. Define your purpose, know your customer, and build a minimum viable product before scaling.

“RPO isn’t just a delivery model; it’s a mindset shift towards partnership.”
